Dr. Felicia Hill-Briggs Joins Dr. Oz For Diabetes Alert Day

Wed, 23 Mar 2016

Baltimore, March 23 2016 – Johns Hopkins researcher Dr. Felicia Hill-Briggs joined a panel of experts for a Diabetes Alert Day episode of popular health and wellness show, Dr. Oz. Her appearance on Dr. Oz was in coordination with the launch of a PSA campaign designed to raise awareness among 86 million Americans who are prediabetic.

Nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it and aren’t aware of the long-term risks to their health, including type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Current trends suggest that, if not treated, 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years. The good news is that prediabetes often can be reversed through weight loss, diet changes and increased physical activity. Diagnosis is key: research shows that once people are aware of their condition, they are much more likely to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

An expert in behavioral medicine and chronic diseases, Dr. Hill-Briggs spoke at length on the show about the important roles diet and exercise play in preventing prediabetes. Dr. Hill-Briggs’ own diabetes management program, DECIDE, is a literacy-adapted, self-paced learning tool that helps adults with diabetes improve self-management by developing their problem-solving skills and facilitating improved adherence to self-management behaviors.
